As the old woman walked along the beach at dawn, she noticed a young woman ahead of her picking up starfish and flinging them back into the sea. Finally, catching up to the youth, the woman asked her why she was doing this. The answer was that the stranded fish would die if left in the morning sun. "But the beach goes on for endless miles and there are millions of starfish," countered the other. "How can your effort make any difference?" The young woman looked at the starfish in her hand and then threw it safely into the waves.

"It makes a difference to this one," she said.
